Given that similar looking labelling, incomplete labelling or poor label design are common causes of medication errors, it is surprising that the current framework for the user testing of medicines information does not apply to the outer or immediate package information (labelling). This is probably because a valid, cost effective method for testing medicine labelling has not been defined.
With this in mind, pi2 Health Ltd has developed and trialled such a method in collaboration with two leading generic companies.
As for patient information leaflet testing, the pack design test employs a diagnostic test method. This involves assessing how easy it is to identify and select specific medicines in real life settings - in the patient's home and in operating dispensaries with different working practices and storage systems. This method is also called 'pick testing' and has been shown to reveal areas for improvement in package design, which would not have been evident by simply asking potential users for their opinions.
Further trials of this method are planned for the coming year.
